The difference between white and black planter bags

With all the different planter bag options available these days, how do you know which is the best for you?
Here, we take a look at the difference between white and black plastic planter bags.
Black planter bags: pros and cons
Black planter bags absorb sunlight more readily, leading to warmer soil temperatures. This can be beneficial for plant species that thrive in warmer conditions, including vegetables such as tomatoes and capsicums.
However, this can be a drawback in warmer conditions. Overheated soil often leads to faster moisture evaporation which means your plants could require more frequent watering, while excessive heat absorption can cause root damage and even the death of your plants.

White planter bags: pros and cons
White planter bags reflect sunlight, helping keep soil cooler. This can be helpful in warmer climates or for plants that prefer cooler root temperatures, including leafy greens and root vegetables. Cooler soil temperatures can also help retain moisture for longer, reducing the need to water your plants as often.
White planter bags can also provide a cleaner, more aesthetically pleasing look in some settings. However, in colder climates, white planter bags can slow plant growth due to cooler soil temperatures. Also, roots typically don’t like to be exposed to light, which can encourage excessive self-pruning.

The perfect planter bag for you
Aside from colour, the main differences between white and black plastic planter bags comes down to how much sunlight they let in and how much heat they retain.
The ideal planter bag for your plants will depend on the species being grown and the climate they’ll be grown in. In general, choose black planter bags for species that prefer warmer conditions and white planter bags for species that that thrive in cooler temperatures and/or whose roots require more sunlight.
Remember, the thickness of the planter bag will also play a role in heat absorption and retention, with thicker bags generally providing better insulation. If you prefer using white bags but are worried about a lack of heat retention or the amount of light they let in, try asking your supplier for thicker bags.
By considering the above points, you can choose the best planter bag to help optimise the growth and ongoing health of your plants.
